Challenge Limus 33 Open Tubular Review

I’ll admit to bagging pretty hard on this tire the first time around.  But in retrospect, I didn’t give the tire a chance.  I was excited about the tire upon it’s introduction as it came about around the same time as the Clement PDX and the prospect of having a number of mud tire options.

For some time I’ve been a Challenge open tubular fan.  The tubular tires haven’t impressed me the same way, we’ve had some with some tread issues, but the clinchers have been a great option.

The Limus tread moves the Fango where it should be, out of the mud category and into an aggressive all-around category.  The Limus has widely-spaced and tall knobs meant to grip, and grip they do.  My initial race on them was about the worst conditions to use the Limus: dry and fast.  I made the mistake of having them as my only set of tires on a day that ended up being a grass crit.  On that day the Limus was a disappointment.  They aren’t the lightest, and add in the huge knobs and it made for a rough day at the races.

But for the ride today, I had a mix of soupy shallow mud, some deep puddles, and a lot of wet leaves.  In these conditions, the Limus shined.  Coming out of some deeper spots, I saw no mud accumulating at all.  The deeper the mud got, the better the tire performed.  In the really shallow and slippery mud the tire was better than most, but deep mud performance was incredible.

I had the tires set up with Challenge Latex tubes and set to about 35psi front and rear.  Under my body weight, that’s relatively low for a clincher for me while training, but I never felt the tire bottom out.  Next time around I’ll drop the pressure a bit more and see how much better this tire gets.

As it stands, if you feel that you struggle in wet or slippery conditions, this is a tire to check out.  I don’t think it should be your one and only if you plan to run a single tire all season, but if you find yourself timid in corners and looking for a crutch to help you out, this may be for you.
